73.) Man's Best Friend: Part One
September 16, 1987
Written by Michael Landon
Directed by Michael Landon
Paul and Michelle Raines can't have anymore children and hire a
surrogate mother in hopes they can have a baby boy. Their only daughter
is Jenny, who loves her dog she calls Jake.
Jonathan and Mark are hired at a dog kennel that is owned by a woman
named Lil, who is reluctant to hire them, but naturally Jonathan
demonstrates he has a way with animals and he and Mark are hired.
That night, Jake is out for a walk and is chased by some wild dogs.
Jonathan appears out of nowhere and tells one of the wild dogs to behave
himself. When the animal refuses to obey, Jonathan turns himself into a
lion and scares the dog away.
He and Mark take Jake to the local orphanage ran by Miss Holly, where a
lonely little boy named Alex is depressed about not being adopted and
without a canine companion.
Alex falls in love with Jake and is very happy now. However, the local
newspaper takes their picture and Jenny sees them while reading it one
day. She and her family go to Lil's kennel and take the dog back home.
Jonathan has the unenviable task of telling Alex the dog was taken back
by the owners and he is very sorry. The young boy is mentally crushed by
the sad news.
In doing his assignment for all parties, he goes to Jenny's home and
discovers Jake is now a very unhappy dog, now that he is separated from
Alex.
He suggests to Jenny, that if he brings Alex to see her dog, this will
make Jake very happy. She is reluctant at first, but she agrees, with
her grandfather's wise advice.

74.) Man's Best Friend: Part Two
September 23, 1987
Written by Michael Landon
Directed by Michael Landon
Paul and Michelle are becoming very concerned about the surrogate
mother experiment, while Alex is staying at their home with Jenny and
Jake. The dog is very happy now, and Jenny and Alex are getting along
great, like brother and sister.
Alex loves them and feels as though he should be part of their family.
Alex is notified another couple want him to stay with them. Out of love,
Jenny gives her dog to Alex, tells him she loves him and they bid
farewell. Miss Holly tells Alex the Turners can't let Jake go with him
to their home, because of building regulations there. She takes Alex and
Jake back to Lil's kennel to drop off the dog. She pulls over at a gas
station, after Alex tells her he needs to use the restroom. He goes
inside and escapes out the window with Jake, because he can't stand to
bear another separation in his life.
Alex and Jake exhaust themselves running up the mountainside to escape
from being separated. Jonathan and Mark are alerted to this and drive
over to tell Paul and Michelle, who are leaving for a vacation. They
have just received news that the surrogate mother's attempt at giving
them a baby son has failed and need to get away from it all.
Alex leaves Jake to get help at the Raines's home and they have just
drove out, but are intercepted by Jonathan and Mark, who tell them Alex
and the dog have ran away. Just then, they see Alex running for help, as
he falls down from exhaustion.
Paul and Michelle take Alex back home and call the doctor, while
Jonathan goes up the mountain to retrieve Jake, who Alex is very
concerned about. He is afraid the dog will die and if he does, Alex will
blame himself for it.
In examining themselves, Paul and Michelle discover they love Alex like
a son and officially adopt him, with Jake recovered from the incident.
They now have Alex as their son and he has the family he always dreamed
about, with Jake as his dog, Jenny as his sister and Paul's dad as his
grandfather.
At the conclusion of this story, Jonathan and Mark have a very sobering
exchange in the car:
Mark: "Well, kemosabe, it all worked out alright."
Jonathan: "Yeah. Yeah, at least for Alex."
Mark: "Thanks to Jake. Now I know why they call them man's best
friend."
Jonathan: "Yeah, it seems kind of strange, doesn't it?"
Mark: "What?"
Jonathan: "You think man's best friend would be man?"

cues heard in the later years of the series, mainly from the "Forever"

The theme cues accompany the dolphins at sea and when Lee is trying to
get the young dolphin Max to take her for a swim in the pool. They will
bring joy and tears to your eyes, with stunning direction of these
scenes by Michael.
The final scenes that take place at sea that conclude this moving
story, feature these beautifully rescored, emotional and swelling cues
that only a genius as David Rose could do, and bring vivid memories of
being heard some 16 years before on "Bonanza".
Stock clips of the dolphins at sea and of Washington, D.C. are edited
in from the studio's film library of stock footage for cutting costs and
